This is the second in a very exciting series we’re bringing to you on IFB in anticipation of the upcoming #IFBcon. Each day in the month of August, we’ll have a different post designed to help your blog become – you guessed it – bigger, better and bolder in anticipation of the conference.
Yesterday we spoke about how important it is to establish why you're blogging – not only in preparation for the conference, but to give your blog direction and focus. Once you've done this I can promise you'll feel a surge of confidence and motivation that will make your conference experience even more valuable.
Now, fast-forward with me for a minute. You've just arrived at 82 Mercer. You've got your coffee and your smart phone, you're dressed to kill and ready to learn and network and hang out and have a blast. (Oh, and in case you haven't yet, buy your tickets here.) With serious swagger you head right to your favorite brand's booth. You say hello. They say hello back. And then…
And then what?
What do you say when a brand rep, a fellow blogger, a friend or business associate asks you, “What's your blog about?”
You're on the spot, and it's time to shine. For the conference and beyond it's essential that you can whip out a jazzy, interesting and enticing one-or-two sentence summary of what your blog is all about.
In this short and sweet explanation you'll want to:
- convey what makes your blog unique
- summarize what it's about
- give a little taste of what kinds of things you post
- briefly share who your reader and target demographic is
For example, if I were to explain to you what my blog is about, I might say, “I have a fashion and personal style blog that tries to approach each post with lightness and humor. I share outfits, music playlists, travel photos and my favorite runway shows from time to time.”
Try reviewing your “About” page on your blog, your Twitter bio and review your last few pages of posts. Notice trends, pick out really telling adjectives and try to trim as much unnecessary blah blah blah as possible. Take a look at your analytics and really understand who your reader is. Global? local? Diverse? This is all important for a peer or partner to know, should they ask.
Do you blog on a budget? Do you include recipes? Are you petite? Pick out the nuances that set you apart and will give whomever you are speaking with a great idea of your mission as a blogger. Think of it this way: What would you say to Anna Wintour if she asked you what your blog was about? You would make it sound as amazing and chic as possible, right? Right.
To make sure you've got this little spiel down – write it down. Yes, write it. Then re-write it. Next, read it out loud to yourself, and then to someone else. And then edit it again. Memorize your introduction, make it magical, and get ready to breeze right into fruitful, interesting and amazing conversations!
