The week after Christmas is one of the busiest (and most profitable) for the retail industry. While shoppers return unwanted gifts, they also tend to spend more on additional purchases. As a fashion blogger using affiliate links to earn income, this is an important week for your business as well!
As we pointed out earlier in the month, the holidays are a great time to make money blogging, especially if you're using affiliate links in gift guides, etc. Hopefully, many of your readers were dazzled and inspired by your gift suggestions and made purchases that earned you commissions!
Now for the tough part — since they were probably shopping for other people, the receivers of the gifts may not actually keep them. That means returns that in turn result in sales that don't close – and you lose commissions.
To counteract this post-holiday slump and keep your momentum into the new year, here are a few tips:
1. Diversify your revenue streams: Now is a great time to seek out new advertisers for banner ads, sponsored content and giveaways that will keep traffic and revenue up. While many people are on vacation through January 1, don't hesitate to get in touch on the 2nd to get a jump on potential new clients and relationships.
2. Keep up with online sales & share them with readers: Like I said, this is a time of returns and sales! People will have gift cards, store credit to spend – and probably will be eying the things that Santa forgot to leave under the tree. Share your favorite sales and deals on your blog to drive readers to great purchases that benefit you as well.
3. Give your new content a sales-driven foundation: If you're really worried about making up for returned commissions, or have seen the analytics in your network take a serious drop, consider putting a heavier emphasis on shopping and shoppable content in your posts.
