Have you heard the most perfect fashion news in fashion history? Eighty-year-old Joan Didion is the new face French luxury brand Celine.
Well, did you just feel the collective intake of breath shared by every cool girl you know?
Obviously, YES. There's so much that inspires me about this collaboration I don't even know where to start. Celine is the ultimate cool-girl brand—so cool that it can make fur-covered shower shoes a must-have. Although Didion now lives in New York, she is the ultimate California cool girl (a breed I hold in the highest esteem), having been born and raised in Sacramento, and having written like no other about life in CA. Both Celine and Didion live in an eternal '70s aesthetic punctuated by enormous sunglasses and minimal embellishments. She is a masterful packer with a level of skill I can only dream of achieving. Oh, to have the restraint and confidence to pack so few things!
Julianne Escobedo Shepherd hit the nail on the head, though, when she wrote on Jezebel's The Muse about why this collab is so extremely perfect:
Didion's economy of words—the way she extricates the most important points by a strict usage of diamond-sharp insights and cold, hard information—echoes the way Philo designs in general, with a lack of nonsense that is almost pained—almost sterile, actually, in its perfection and total commitment to intellectualism.
Oh my god yes. For a middle-aged blogger who started out as a journalist and who just wants to write and not create any more god-damned best-of lists, my faith in humanity has been restored.
