Welcome to this week’s IFB member spotlight! Each Friday we feature an IFB member we want to get to know better and share his or her story. WHO: Emerson Rogers
WHERE: British Columbia, Canada
You would never guess by looking through her blog that Emerson Rogers shies away from the spotlight. She describes herself as “the type of kid who would hide behind their mum’s legs and wouldn’t talk to anybody,” and says her tendency to avoid attention continues to this day. Last year she decided to do something to change that, and launched her blog as a way to force herself out of her shell. In it she shares with you not only her outfits, but her thoughts and struggles as well, making her posts genuine and relatable. And we are crushing hard on her recently-chopped locks!
Emerson enjoys writing about fashion, makeup, real life and the latest books she’s read. When she’s not blogging, she’s busy studying or knitting pieces for her luxury knit business. Read her interview with us to find out more of what it’s been like for her on this journey into the blogging world.
- When and why did you start your blog?
“I started my blog in January of 2015. I had become inspired by all the bloggers I saw on Instagram and thought I might as well give it a shot. As I recently wrote about on my blog, part of the reason I started blogging was also to force myself to become more self-confident and learn about myself.”
- How did you come up with the name?
“I’m actually terrible at coming up with names! I actually Googled “how to name a blog” or something ridiculous like that and followed their instructions. Basically, I just thought of words that describe what I would be writing about, wrote down some synonyms and different words for “writing,” and then started putting them together.
- Do you blog full time or do you also have a day job?
“Unfortunately, I cannot blog full time right now. I am a full time university student working towards a major in English. I also have a part time job and I’m working on expanding my small knitting business Knit Ewe Up.”
- How do you manage to fit blogging into your schedule?
“To be honest, sometimes I’m surprised I can get it all done! But it’s all about making time for the things you love. I love blogging, and it provides me with a creative outlet to expend stress from the rest of my “work”.”
- How did you first become interested in fashion?
“I used to be a huge tomboy. No pink, no skirts or dresses, hair up in a ponytail all day, everyday. And then one day, it just switched. I can’t pinpoint when or how I became interested in fashion. But pretty soon I was flipping through Elle and Vogue and soaking in all the information I could about Audrey Hepburn.”
- How would you describe your style?
“This is always such a tricky question to answer. I love heels, but I usually wear sneakers; I love getting dressed up (and I mean black-tie dressed up) but at the same time, my most-worn clothing item is my pair of boyfriend jeans. I guess, borrowing from my blog name, I'm eclectic, because I never stick to just one style.”
- What is your favorite book of the moment?
“One of my favourite books is Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen. I love the characters’ development and the love story. Another book I absolutely love but always forget to talk about is Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier. I’m a sucker for a period-piece romance! At the moment, though, I’m really enjoying the book What Would Audrey Do? by Pamela Keogh. You can go read my mid-book review on my blog if that sounds like it might be up your alley!”
- Do you have any exciting projects or plans coming up?
“I do have some really exciting projects coming up on the blog, but unfortunately I can’t divulge any information about it yet. I have also come up with a new section of the blog, labeled Real Talk, where I discuss insecurities, hopes, and other weighty issues. It’s new in the making, but I have high hopes for it.”
- Are you monetizing your blog? If so, what do you find works best for you?
“At the moment, I’m not monetizing my blog. Right now, blogging is a creative outlet, something I do for pleasure. I'm so happy that people are enjoying the content I'm putting out to the world!”
- What would you say makes your blog stand out from all the others?
“Well at the moment I’m still trying to find my footing in the blogging world, and I’m still learning all the ropes and figuring out how to photograph and everything. Maybe what's making my blog stand out is the fact that I’m a regular university student, and I think that makes me pretty relatable.”
- If you could describe the look and feel of your blog in one word, what would it be?
- What fashion blogger, designer, or icon would you most like to have a drink with?
“I would have loved to meet with Audrey Hepburn. She is my style icon as well as an inspiration in humanitarianism. I would also love to meet Emma Watson, and discuss style, books, gender equality… Just see where the conversation would lead.”
