15 Places to Submit & Promote Your Start Up Blog

Looking to promote your start up blog? Want to get your name as a blogger out there?

Submit Startup Website

A lot of people are unsure where to start when it comes to promoting their start up blogs and websites. Promoting your site's content on social media might feel like a natural first step, but what if you don't have a large following? We all know about SEO and the importance of link building, but putting this into practice often proves a lot more difficult than most novice bloggers realize. Trying to promote your start up blog or site can be harder than it seems.

We had to go through this marketing experience ourselves when we launched our blog, Man of Many. towards the end of 2012.

We searched out blog after blog, site after site to cover us. It it was a lot of effort. We initially focused on other fashion blogs or similar websites and web media outlets. But it proved difficult partnering in the early stages. We didn't have a large following at the time which, naturally, had us at a disadvantage.

We did find however that although we weren't your typical “start-up”, loads of entrepreneurial sites and directories were willing to cover us. At the very least, they allowed us to submit Man of Many's profile, which was critical to building sustainable traffic and promoting our blog.

We're always willing to help out other blogs in the IFB community – we know it can be tough, but hand in there! We thought we’d share the love and our list of (mostly free) sites. He's a round up of other blogs and directories to submit your blog for marketing, PR, link building and, most importantly, traffic!

Let us know in the comments if we’ve missed something out if there was a site that was critical to your success in building traffic or if you found this list helpful.

    Hey, great list of sites. I just thought I’d throw one more into the mix. I run BestTechie.com and we’re always looking to cover / speak to startups.

    If you’re curious, here’s a little more information about BestTechie:

    BestTechie has been around since 2003, at its core the site is about sharing information and knowledge with people. Our mission is to simplify technology for everyone. BestTechie provides informative videos, product reviews, and articles on all aspects of technology and business. We’re building the place where people will come to learn more about anything related to technology. Whether that be how to properly configure your Facebook privacy settings, figuring out which smartphone to buy, finding the right software to accomplish a task, or reading the latest and most important tech news.

    Reddit brings in a crazy amount of hits. A follower posted a link to my outfit post once and it is now my most viewed post of all time. So now I try to put all my better outfit posts on Reddit, once every two weeks!

        Reddit has things called “subreddits” (basically the same thing as a subforum)

        I like to post outfit photos on the “Today I Wore” subreddit: http://www.reddit.com/r/todayiwore

        And you can post links to your blog when its appropriate on the “Fashion” subreddit: http://www.reddit.com/r/fashion/

        Hope this helps!

        Interesting. I’ll be the first person to admit that I’ve been to reddit a couple times, I’ve even enjoyed some of the treads, but I’ve never really understood how to become involved, comment, link to my work. I’ll give it another shot and see. Thx.

    • Onianwah

      I have been to Reddit just once and never gone back (shame on me). Now I am definitely going back there to learn how it works.

    We have tried few things but we are still struggling to get more traffic. Our blog is relatively new (started in May 2013) so I guess it needs time, but this seems incredibly helpful. We will definitely have a look and try it out. Thank you a lot for sharing it!

    I hate to leave a negative comment, especially because I value the info on this blog, but I feel I need to warn readers before they lose their time. The writer of this post has definitely not used the resources he mentioned. Here are my problems with his list:
    (1) Most of the links are not valid anymore;
    (2) Most of the links that do work ask for (a lot of) money to include your link;
    (3) Several resources are link farms that might get your blog banned from the search engines;
    (4) Many links are for tech sites and applications; most of them don’t even allow a submission;
    (5) The ones that are valuable in this list, are the ones you have already heard of.

    Don’t waste your time like I just did. What works for my blog to get traffic is StumbleUpon, Pinterest, and interacting with other blogs.

      Hi Travelling Cats,

      Thanks so much for the feedback and it is definitely not a negative comment. We are currently going through the list and cleaning it up in response to your comments. A few of them might have changed in the period since we went through the process ourselves and we were merely trying to share something that in particular worked for building traffic for our site.

      We value your opinion and understand that this list may not be for everyone here on IFB.

      Regards,
      Scott

      I checked a few from the list and not every one was the kind of place I would submit my blog to, but many were very decent. Plus you can not expect a list to be perfect. As with any list puled off the internet some sorting through should be expected.

    Thanks for the comprehensive list–I just joined Reddit after reading it.

    In the past I have noticed that posting externally (through other sites) hasn’t gotten me any boost in traffic but it certainly can’t hut to keep trying new ones. I’m glad to hear it helped you with your new site.

    Backlinks are links to your site from other websites. For example, if you write an article and post it on your friends blog with link text leading back to your site, you have created an SEO backlink. Search engines, especially Google, use the number and quality of backlinks your site has in order to determine its rank.

    I hate to be critical of what is a really, really great idea, but submitting your site to 96 random directories sounds like a terrible idea from an SEO perspective. The latest Panda update has created greater penalties for sites who use link farms or irrelevant directories as link material, and this could get your blacklisted from Google, which will require lots of work to fix the consequences of a few stupid links. Also, I’m not sure that most fashion blogs qualify as start-ups: unless they’re planning on offering an actual product beyond discussion of fashion or daily outfit posts, or do something truly unique, I doubt owners of these sites will be interested in including their site. Also, simply spamming places like Reddit with your links will only get you blacklisted or banned.

    I’d say it’s more effective to build your presence in a few chosen communities, such as Reddit, Chictopia, Lookbook, IFC, etc., and work regularly on connecting with the community there before promoting your blog. Hard work, but at least it’ll pay off.

    Great pointers!

    As a fashion blogger with finally a somewhat decent following (come on, 5000 unique visitors a day isn’t bad for a beginner!), I’d have to recommend:

    – Becoming more active in the Liebster Award community, nominating other blogs, etc. Sometimes the favor is returned.

    – Posting to sites like Makeoverly (content submitted by bloggers) and Medium (content website covering every topic you could think of), as you can promote your blog in the author bio.

    – Utilizing social media. This should go without saying, though 🙂

    – Creating a “Contact” button on your blog. Make it easy for other bloggers or even brands who may want to work with you to contact you.

    I didn’t even know about more than half of these but I did find some of them to be a little harder to understand than others.Reddit for example, I created an account but don’t know how to post a link to my site on it or even etsy, which is one someone in the comments mentioned.Other than that, this was a cool list and thanks man!
