But the truth is, we don’t “own” that collective list of information of the individuals that follow our Instagram and Pinterest accounts. This means you’re putting yourself (and your business) at risk, if you’re just concerned with growing your followers.

And many of us don’t realize that email subscribers are more likely to become paying customers. So, when you start diversifying your business (by selling additional products, coaching or services) you’ll have a list of potential buyers at your finger tips.

It’s also one of the easiest ways for us to keep in touch with our audience. Sending out an email newsletter is essentially sending content right into our readers’ inboxes, as opposed to waiting for them to come pay us a visit on our website.

Don’t get us wrong. Here at IFB, we think social media is a great tool for bloggers, influencers and businesses. It can help you grow a profitable and engaged blog. It can connect you to your audience, and drives traffic to your site.

But there is one issue with putting all of your eggs into the social media basket: you can’t control it and you don’t own it.

Take recent changes in the Facebook and Instagram algorithms as an example.

Not too long ago, Facebook changed the rules.

Readers that actively sign up to your email list are making something very clear. They’re fans of your work and care enough to have your content sent directly to their inboxes. And this also means that they’ll be more likely to support you, in the chances that you ever have something to sell. Most people are less picky about who they “follow” on social media vs. who they subscribe to via email.

This means that should you decide to launch a product line or service, you will already have a solid list of people who are more likely than your average reader to buy what you have to see.
